In Case you were Wondering

For those of you who may be wondering.... This is a blog I created to record the events in my life that have been happening ever since I joined the Miss New Hampshire family. Everything Pageant related, community service related, and maybe a few random posts will be here so that when I reach my goal I can see how far I've come thanks to the wonderful program that is Miss New Hampshire. Thankyou for reading!

Prom, Graduation, and My Second Title!

So once again, I've been very behind on updating but here we go. First of all, I graduated from high school!! There sure were a lot of tears to be had during the last week of public school as everyone suddenly came down with a severe case of nostalgia, but I can say that I regret nothing on the people I befriended, how I performed in school, what activities I participated in, or how I never conformed to what everyone wanted me to be. High school was definitely my period of self realization that I was never destined to be someone who fit in with the crowd and that I would never change myself to do so. I'll miss good old Londonderry High, and more than anything I'll miss my wonderful marching band, but I'm sure college has plenty in store for me.

Graduation!

Prom

In pageant news, I competed in the first local I could this year, which was Miss Kingston/Seacoast, and I won!! I was so shocked but as the crown went on my head I thought about how this year could go. Being as it's my second year going to Miss NH, everything is going to (hopefully) go much smoother; although last year was an amazing roller coaster of confusion and adventure. It's a really scary thing to be a rookie when everyone else has so much experience but it's also incredible to think that maybe someday I could be like all of the contestants I look up to.

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is last year was my year to learn and this year is my year to excel. I plan to dive head first into community service during my freshman year at UNH and explore different platform options while continuing the work I've done with eating disorders. I love the whole idea of striving to reach goals so this year is going to be very enjoyable for me as I work toward reaching my goals for Miss NH. That's one thing this organization has taught me is that you really need to know what you want and do what you need to to get there. Whether it be to do more community service, win the academic achievement award, a preliminary talent, preliminary swimsuit, or even the Miss New Hampshire crown; it's goals that keep us moving forward in the path of self betterment. So I plan to spend way too much time at the gym, reach new heights in my talent, explore new wardrobe options, and use my title as Miss Kingston to make a real difference in the lives of others this year. Stay tuned :)

So I Know It's Been a While...

So i know it has been forever and I have just updated  on how Miss NH went but.. I just got my new laptop for college, thanks to Miss NH for the scholarship money to make it happen! Thus, I have more of an ability to post with ease. Anyways, I wanted to post a picture of my most recent adventure.... Before I gave up my Title as Miss Monadnock Region in October, I wanted to climb the mountain. Let me tell you this was no easy task for a first time climber. Not to mention the park ranger advised us to climb the "white dot trail" which just so happened to be the most difficult terrain. Scaling thousands of feet of sheer rock face was something I never thought I'd do. However, after several long hours of climbing we finally reached the top! I awkwardly took my crown and sash from my backpack and put them on for a much needed photo op amidst the many stares of those around me. No regrets though, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm glad I took advantage of it. So here you have it, Miss Monadnock Region at the top of Mount Monadnock. And who said pageant girls don't have what it takes?

Miss New Hampshire 2011 and the Road There

Ever since bootcamp, I've been wondering how on Earth I would manage to fit everything I could possibly say about Miss NH onto a blog. Thus, I avoided it for a while... hence the lack of posts. Let's start when things started moving at warp speed after boot camp happened. The Annual Tea Party happened and I was so excited to be a part of such an awesome community outreach activity. I love little kids and I love being a role model to them. With that in mind I was super pumped to perform a song for them in the format of which I am most comfortable, singing and playing guitar. I figured the little girls would really enjoy hearing a song by the most popular artist right now, Taylor Swift. So that's what I did. There is nothing better than looking out and seeing everyone singing and clapping along to the music. I loved it. Here's a picture of myself and two of my fellow titleholders in our pink attire for the event :)

Amidst the preparations for Miss NH came the Miss NH ball very suddenly. This event was kind of a kick off to spark the many Miss NH activities that were going to take place during the coming week. I had a wonderful date named Jon, who just happened to be the son of my lovely director Deb. He cleans up nicely :) I wish i had more pictures from this event, I'm sure I do somewhere... on a camera that I probably lost. Anyways, here's what I could scrape up.

Note to self: Always bring a camera with you to things you want to remember.

New Hampshire Girls Wear every color in the book.

Okay so to continue with the story. I honestly have almost zero if any pictures at all from Miss NH whether it be onstage or off for two reasons. I forgot a camera and also I'm not the most photogenic individual alive so basically everything I have is unusable. Words can paint quite the picture however.

Twas the night before move in and all through my house were my director and I running around. Not necessarily how the traditional story goes but it was quite a show. We were attempting to pack everything and figure out which outfits I would wear which day and what jewelry to wear out of Deb's magical jewelry collection. Last minute, I know. But knowing her and I, there really wasn't any other way we could have done it. Hours went by until we were both too exhausted to realize I needed some sleep before the big move in day! So it was the big move in day at the hotel and I, being a rookie, had absolutely zero idea what was to come of the week ahead. All the girls looked amazing and ready for the competition. While I was technically one of them, I still look up to them like every little girl who wants to be a princess and boy did they look beautiful. It's encouraging to know that every girl competing for the title of Miss NH was well qualified and prepared for the job if they were given the opportunity; the job would be left in good hands.

Day 1 we welcomed the rigorous dance rehearsals and talent rehearsals as a chance to finally run through the show on the big stage with the big set. It was all coming together. Of course, I was struggling to focus as my mind was on the interview that would be coming very fast.

Basically to summarize the rest of my Miss NH week, we danced more than this uncoordinated body has ever danced, I sang my heart out, ate everything in sight, and slept every chance I got. Oh, and my interview went stellar, the judges were beyond friendly and for my first time out in the big leagues, I felt comfortable with my performance.

I didn't really make my  mark on the Miss NH stage but that week left its mark on me. The girls were incredible. Lissa, my roommate, was everything I could have asked for and Im so grateful that I had the opportunity to room with such a kind and passionate person. She could have talked forever about her work with her platform and I would have enjoyed listening every second. It's really beautiful to hear someone speak about something they are so passionate about; it's refreshing to know that the world will be left in the hands of those more concerned about others than themselves. Lissa led me through every hesitant step as I tried to figure out what the whole experience was about. I cannot thank her enough for welcoming me as she did.

In addition to my wonderful roommate, the other contestants definitely left their mark on my heart forever. Katrina, you were always there to calm me down in one of my hair freak outs and provide the much needed laughs when everything else seemed to stressful to handle. Ms. Lyman, it was an honor competing with you after I watched you as a quiet spectator last year, you have big things ahead of you I just know it. My entire dressing room was wonderful: Rebecca sort of stole my space on the counter but I couldn't have been more okay with it :) Mini Moose, I cannot get enough of you.

Meghan Lamontagne, you are my hero. Your perseverance and growth through Miss NH is something I will always strive to achieve. Thankyou for being such an amazing big sister to me this year and talking to me when everyone else was a bit hesitant to. I'll miss you so much next year.

Regan, I know this post is extremely late but if you ever happen to read this I want you to know you're an absolutely beautiful Miss New Hampshire and I cannot wait to see what you do in Vegas, I know it's going to be phenomenal I just hope I can witness it in person. I've loved seeing you at all the locals this year.

I have so much I could say to all the contestants as each individual played a vital role in making my week such a memorable one. First and foremost I really need to thank all the Miss NH volunteers. It wasn't until this week that I really got to see every single person involved with the organization. The sheer number of hours spent working to raise the scholarship dollars, build the stage, truck the girls back and forth, provide us with food, etc, is incredible and I cannot thank everyone enough. Not only for the scholarships that are helping me through college but for providing a place to make the memories that I have. Thankyou all.

As you can see, Miss NH wasn't really about me competing all that much this year. It was about the experience and making memories and friends that will continue to grow as I stay with this organization. I know it all sounds cheesier than a dairy festival but I love this family that as adopted me into its longstanding traditions. I look forward very much to what next year will bring.

Miss NH Bootcamp

Well seeing as it's my first year being a part of Miss NH, I had no idea what to think about what exactly "Miss NH Bootcamp" was. It was the first time everyone from the class of 2011 got together to talk about what exactly we were getting ourselves into. I can honestly say after our first talk with the board, I was pretty terrified of what was to come. We used the lottery method to determine the order of contestants, and I was pretty happy about my slot.. relieved to get talent over with on the first day of prelims :) We took the sponsor photo, definitely not my most flattering, but it happens to everyone at some point. We also recorded an interview that would be cut down to make up our talent introductions. It was a very long day, but also marked the beginning of the final stretch to the big Miss New Hampshire week. Now onto the final preparations...

National IHOP Pancake Day

The IHOP Restraurant chain generously donated an entire day of free pancakes for its customers to collect donations for Children's Miracle Network, Miss America's National Platform. On March 1 2011, Miss Rockingham County, Katrina Ulaky, and I attended the Free Pancake celebration at the Salem IHOP to encourage customers to donate to CMN. We me many interesting and generous people. Thankyou to the owners of the Salem IHOP for your hospitality!

My First Ever Photoshoot

In my journey to Miss New Hampshire I came to this realization that I had to actually have someone take pictures of me for my head shots and autograph cards. Evidently self taken head shots are not encouraged... although my senior picture certainly wasn't anything to be embarrassed about! With this in mind, I enlisted the help of Chris and Peggy Arbeene to take my pictures. These two people are incredible. They are so sweet and helpful, especially to a girl who had no experience with "modeling"; I can't thank them enough for their hospitality and dedication to this program. Thankyou so much!

After a long day, here are some of the results...

And Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen Is...

CONGRATULATIONS TO LAUREN PERCY!!

It was so surreal to me to be watching Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen from the audience with a crown on my head this year. I never would have believed it was possible after having competed in my first pageant ever on that stage just a year before. Just goes to show you what a truly outstanding program this one is. I had the privilege of knowing many of the girls competing this year from having competed before and had the opportunity to meet the newcomers as well. Naturally, every girl shined on that stage.  This competition really brings the best out of everyone in it.

As for Lauren, I can't say enough about how much I adore this girl. She is so deserving of this title. She is gorgeous, intelligent, extremely talented, and has a personality that makes everyone around her smile. Although younger than me, she has taught me more than anyone how to succeed in this program. She is extremely passionate about volunteering and will make an amazing representative for the state of New Hampshire this year as she compete in August for Miss America's Outstanding Teen. I wish her the absolute best and know that she'll make us all so proud. Love you Lauren!!

Making the Cut: Pantene Beautiful Lengths 2011

My school has a growing tradition that has been going on for five years at our winter pep rally. It's a very unique tradition where girls pledge to donate at least 8 inches of their hair to go towards making wigs for cancer patients. Over 200 girls pledged this year and Pantene even sent a documentary crew from Texas to record the event. I pledged to donate my hair in the fall and certainly was nervous on January 8th when the day came around.

I wore my crown and Miss Monadnock sash to represent the organization and prove that anyone who has the hair to donate, can donate and should donate. The entire school was informed that I would be participating in Miss NH in April and that it is traditional for girls to have curled long locks at the competition but that I was donating to prove that anyone can no matter their excuse. I'm proud to say I got a lot of media attention to spread the goodwill and service efforts of the Miss New Hampshire organization and let the world know that it's not a beauty pageant but an amazing scholarship organization.

Trip of a Lifetime: The Rosebowl

When I found out last fall in a climactic and dramatic football game field show presentation that my band was going to be going to the Rosebowl parade in 2011 on a phone call through the loudspeaker from the President of the Parade, Jeff Throop I was overly excited. That meant that I was going to be the Senior Drum Major in the largest Parade in the world and that I would be fulfilling another dream of mine. I never imagined that I would have this opportunity and I couldn't wait for the year to come.

The year was filled with practices in the blistering heat and the frigid cold as well as local parades until such conditions as well. The freshmen had to learn everything and perfect their marching in just a few short months and the rest of the classes had to step it up to become the best band that they could be. As a leader I was extremely proud of their progress as we became closer and closer to the date we were flying out to Pasadena California.

In California we marched on the ice at the LA Kings game, marched at night in Disney Land, performed our field show at Band Fest and of course, Marched in the 2011 Rose Parade on New Years Day. I was so proud to be their leader and as they marched behind me I knew we were representing New England wonderfully.

Needless to say, this was the most memorable trip ever, even if I didn't get to meet Paula Deen. Without a wink of sleep we accomplished all of the tasks we set out to when we boarded the planes at Logan and I'm forever grateful for the memories.

Volunteering From Crowning through December

Being Miss Monadnock had given me the opportunity to volunteer at so many different events I would never have been able to otherwise. On December 6th I volunteered at a Monday night football game at Gillette against the Jets. Definitely one of the coldest and longest nights ever! I can't thank Rebecca Rendina enough for giving me a ride so I could do this. I'll definitely be volunteering at Gillette as much as I can over the summer.

I also attended and sung some Christmas songs at Miss Lakes Region's Polar Express of Miracles event on December 19th. That was a great event and congratulations to Caitlin for running it.

On December 23rd I volunteered at the Salvation Army Toy Shop all day. That was one of the greatest volunteer events I've ever done. It was amazing to see how much the community was able to donate even in these hard times. It was great to see all the volunteers working hard to make it so that hundreds of families could be served through this station. The day went by very fast and felt amazing. I cant wait until next year when I'll be able to volunteer both days on my winter break.

A Dream Come True!

On November 20th I made the terrifying drive to the Monadnock Region, which was scary to the girl who hardly leaves her small town. I was so fortunate to be drawn as the last contestant and have plenty of time to prepare for the interview and leave the judges with a fresh image of me in their minds. My interview was amazing and from that point on I knew I had to give it my all if I was going to use that great interview to carry me through to the crown. This was the first pageant with a new platform of which I am extremely passionate about entitled "You are Beautiful: Eating Disorder Prevention and Awareness" and a new talent song (A Moment Like This) so I had a whole new game and was hoping it would tip the scale just enough to make me memorable.

In the end, it worked. I was crowned Miss Monadnock Region 2011 and my craziest dream had come true. I had a crown on my head and would be headed to Miss New Hampshire. From the moment they announced my name a hundred ideas of what I could do with this opportunity rushed through my mind and I'm excited to accomplish everything I can in my year of service.

What this is and Where it all Began

So most of the people I know know I'm really into band and music but what they might not know is that I'm also quote on quote a "pageant girl". How this came to be is sort of an interesting story.

I was sitting at the dining room table "working on an essay" and I got a bit sidetracked, ending up on google and typing "New Hampshire Pageants" of course Miss New Hampshire was the first result, followed by Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen. I read up on the website and it sounded like an opportunity I couldn't pass up so I told my very surprised mother and the adventure began. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but in the end I managed to make Top 10 at states and knew I was born to do this.

In the months following Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen I had moved into the age category of "Miss" which was certainly a shocker seeing as I still felt like a teen. I competed in the following competitions:

Miss Greater Derry $100 participation award- it was such a relief to get my first local under my belt! and what a great one to start with. Miss Greater Derry is such an intense production that I gained so much experience just for having participated and I cannot wait until next year. Congratulations to MC who I had a great time talking to while we waited for our interviews

Miss Kingston/Seacoast- I am so glad I had the chance to participate in this pageant, I got third runner up! It was such a huge accomplishment for me to have a result to all the work I had been doing as far as practicing for interview and talent and stage presence. I had the chance to watch my interview with Trisha Tidd which was extremely helpful in determining what I should work on. I'm so thankful for her help. Congratulations to Bess and Sarah, way to represent the vocalists :)

Miss Londonderry- My hometown, I certainly had high hopes for this pageant but didn't end up placing. It was a great experience though and I hope to hold this title someday :) Have fun representing Londonderry Adria!

Miss Greater Plaistow- What an extravagant production! I loved this pageant and I loved the stage- best of all I got First runner Up! 300 more dollars for the scholarship fund and Congratulations to Erica Millet, you were a really awesome person to get to know that day

Miss Gate City/ Souhegan Valley- Didn't place but had a good time :) Congratulations to both Britneys!

Miss Rockingham County- third runner up with a 750 dollar scholarship! Thankyou so much to Paula Moore for her extreme generosity and congratulations to Katrina Ulaky on her first title!
